| The Ambazac Hills |
The
rounded outlines of the Ambazac hills and the Saint-Goussaud Massif
form a natural barrier, facing East to West, which separates the Marche
to the North from the Limousin to the South. These hills stretch for
70 km, are 30 km wide, and at their highest point reach 2,500 ft. at
the Puy de Sauvagnac. More spread out and rugged than their neighbours
to the West (Monts de Blond), they are situated between the rivers
Vienne and Gartempe and are collectively known as the Grands Monts.
31% of the Limousin region is covered with oak chestnut and pine forest, which is home to a wide variety of wild mushrooms, and moorland with golden broom and purple heather. It is also a land of pure water with rushing streams, lakes and deep valleys. Although the region is very popular with French ramblers, you are unlikely to meet many on any of the walks, such is the size and number of trails in the region. We have often walked all day without seeing another soul, you feel like you have the whole of nature to yourself. ![]() There are usually plenty of historic sites and things of interest to see on the walks, the odd thing about this region is that so much is understated. On the Circuit Romain, while walking through the dense forest you suddenly come upon the ruins of the ancient roman city of Praetorium, with the remains of the its amphi-theatre still there, and nothing but a small wooden sign to mark its existence. Almost like discovering it for the first time! Mountaineering it isn't, but if you are looking for a holiday which combines relaxation and the opportunity of donning your boots and experiencing nature in its wild splendour right on your doorstep, then there is little to beat this region. |
